Up in Smoke? What to do with that old Detector!
What a dilemna! Everyone has smoke detectors, but no one knows how to dispose of them! While the typical answer is to take it to the Household Hazardous Waste site nearest to your home, the center serving Knox County residents does not accept them.
This just requires a little extra work…luckily, the good recyclers at KRC have faith that the people of Knoxville are up to the challenge!
According to the Solid Waste department of another city,
“The entire smoke detector needs to be returned to the manufacturer or store by UPS ground mail (not airmail). The batteries, however, should be removed and properly disposed of or recycled. No special shipping is needed for your smoke detector: just put it in a box, maybe with some newspaper for padding, and send it.”
