Electronics Recycling
With the holidays just around the corner, you may be wanting to make some extra room for those gifts! If you have old electronics, please dispose of them properly. Improper disposal could lead to groundwater contamination.
KRC suggests person-to-person recycling first. If your electronics still work check with your local school, church, or community organization to see if they could use your item.
If your old desktop is too slow for even Grandma to enjoy, you should recycle it.
KRC accepts electronics from members, and will recycle them through 5R Electronics. They are based locally and do not export electronics. Everything is recycled in the United States, keeping jobs and resources here where we need ‘em. 5R also sells refurbished computers, check out our earlier blog post for more information.
You can also take your electronics to the Household Hazardous Waste Center, located at 1033 Elm St., just off of Baxter. They are the only convenience center that accepts electronics at this time.
There are also special e-waste collection events every January. Here are the dates for 2010…
January E-Waste Events:
-Farragut High School, Saturday January 9th 9AM-3PM
-Chilhowie Park, Saturday, January 23rd 9AM-3PM
Every Year Knox County Solid Waste supports Plug Into Your Community a local electronic recycling event. Residents can participate in the Plug Into Your Community event by dropping off old computers, scanners, laptops, printers, calculators, cell phones and other items. There is no fee being collected to drop off items; however, donations are being accepted and will benefit the local non-profit organizations that plan the event: Goodwill Industries and the Optimist Club of West Knoxville. Volunteers from each organization will be on Site to process items and collect donations. For more information contact Knox County Solid Waste offices at 215-5865.
